Naturism holidays are growing in popularity, and while it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it's a sure way to reduce baggage fees at the airport.

Earlier in July, the Irish Naturist Association called for some of Ireland's beaches to be designated nudist, saying that the move could provide a boost to tourism as 2.5 million people in the UK alone take nudist holidays.

Angela Russell, President of the British Naturism Association, agrees that interest in naturism is on the rise.

Commenting on the launch of a new "naked night," she said that "naturism is becoming more and more accepted and there is a growing desire among people with no experience of naturism to give it a try."

This week, flight comparison site Skyscanner has picked its top five destinations for an all-nude holiday.

Among them is La Jenny naturist resort in France, which boasts Europe's only naked golf course, and Spain's Naked Village, where 200 apartments make up a settlement of naturists who enjoy the freedom of roaming the streets in the nude.

Travel blog GoGirlfriend also picked its favorite nudist destinations this week, selecting Hedonism, a risque resort in Jamaica and the upscale Sea Mountain Rance Resort and Spa in California among others.

The whole idea of being able to "steal" intangibles, like ritual or religion, seems to me to be rather weird. It's not like it's copyrighted material after all. If I wish to incorporate a Native practice into my personal spirituality, who is it hurting? If a practice speaks to me, who are you or anyone else to say I can't practice it? I'm not talking about hucksters who hope to turn a profit putting on a sweat lodge, I'm just talking about individuals and private groups who might incorporate a spiritual practice from a culture outside their own, because it speaks to them. I don't see that it harms anyone.

Julia Butterfly Hill: We Live In An Age Of 'Disposability Consciousness

Have human beings lost sight of their connection with the earth?
For Julia Butterfly Hill, an environmental and social activist, the answer is a resounding "yes." According to her, we've forgotten how to co-exist with nature, and are now content living in a mindset of wastefulness.
She calls this phenomenon the "disposability consciousness," and explains how understanding it can help us address numerous social justice issues.
"Every plastic bag, plastic cup, plastic to-go container, that is the petroleum complex in Africa, Ecuador, Columbia, Alaska, you name it," Hill said.
"When you say you're going to throw something away -- where's 'away?' There is no away."
In her travels she asked various native peoples if their original languages had words for waste, or disposable, or trash, and found that none of them did. "Because all traditional knowledge knows there's no such thing," she said.

In the first place, we invaded the wrong country. Every one of the 9/11 hijackers was a Saudi Arabian national! Not a single one was from Afghanistan. Not that war is ever a solution to anything. It never is. It's a total waste of money, of lives needlessly destroyed (civilian and military). Dying in a war is not a heroic gesture, it's just a waste. My father in law once said: " If you die in a war you die for nothing. Because there will always be another war." And don't give me that 4th of July BS about "fighting for our freedom." We haven't fought a single war for our freedom since 1776. Not that there weren't good reasons for being involved in some of our wars, because there were, but freedom wasn't one of them.

An apology to the LHP community

I hereby withdraw all negative remarks I have made here, and elsewhere, regarding LHPs. My only concern with that path is a philosophical one, the idea of someone desiring to have "power over" others. Otherwise, live and let live. Honestly, in evaluating the opposition I have had in the past I have come to realize that I allowed myself to have a dog in the fight, when I really didn't. Rumors were circulating locally that I had made disparaging remarks against the LHP community (not true) but rather than just deny this, I embraced it (it's a Scorpionic tendancy to want to go out and do what you've been accused of). But the fact is, until I had been accused of being anti-LHP I never really had given it much thought.

My own path, that of Druidism, has both characteristics of the LHP and the RHP, and in fact is neither. Druidism is completely neutral.

So I want to apologize to everyone for this, and also for the unfair coupling I made between Satanism and LHP.

It's one of my favorite memories.

On the last day of the small Pagan gathering, perhaps a dozen of us had hiked down the hill, piled into our cars, and made our way to the neighborhood pancake house. Sweaty and grimy, smelling of woodsmoke and insect repellent, clad in hiking boots and sneakers, shorts and blue jeans, we had taken one long table in the middle of the restaurant.

The restaurant itself is a celebration of all things down-to-earth and Vermont. I've seen farmers enjoying a plate of eggs still wearing their barn boots--and been grateful to the ones considerate enough to hose them off first--as well as hunters stoking up either before or after a morning of deer hunting, families with babies in high chairs, and, of course, in leaf season, the occasional tourist.

There's nothing occult or New Age about the Sugar House. It's just there, as it has been for decades, with it's fluorescent lights, tiled floor, and picnic style benches and tables: a local fixture, and the home of the best pancakes and maple syrup in Central Vermont.

Over pancakes and eggs and coffee and orange juice, then, our group of old friends had laughed and joked, told stories of our kids, our families, and our daily lives. We'd caught up on the lives of community members who were not there this year--who had gone back to school, who was getting married or moving across country, divorcing or building a new house--in one last, loving effusion of our sense of ourselves as Tribe, before we would return to atomized lives among our non-Pagan friends and neighbors.

It was, as every year, a wonderful meal.

But my memory comes from a moment at the end of the meal, when a stranger from another table approached us, and hesitantly asked, "Excuse me. I don't mean to be rude--I couldn't help overhearing a little. Are you all... Pagans?"

We said we were, and she smiled, and nodded, and went back to her own table.

Understand, none of us were wearing anything remotely like flowing robes. I don't even think there were any tie-dyed shirts in evidence; any pentacles or other occult jewelry were either small or tucked into the flannel shirts and tees we were wearing.

Nor had our conversation been overtly esoteric. To the best of my recollection, we weren't speaking of gods or goddesses, ritual drumming techniques or magickal tools. Instead, our conversation had focused on daily life: our kids, our plans, our small triumphs and disappointments.

But somehow, seeing how we interacted, this woman whom none of us even knew had figured out that there was something different about us from the usual crowd at the Sugar House. Somehow, she had figured out that we were Pagans.

It is my belief that her clue was how we loved each other, how we belonged to one another.

We related to each other with the freedom and trust and happiness that comes of being in your deepest self with a group of others, not once only, but over and over again, over the course of decades. We belonged to each other in a way that is rare today, in our society of nuclear families and individualistic consumers. Perhaps only communities of monks or nuns have a similar experience--but an experience largely cloistered from the world, and, in any case, rooted in a religion far less world-embracing than Paganism.

The key to understanding us was our connectedness. Wiccans and Druids, shamans and Hellenes and Kabbalists, we had stood together in the firelight and joined together in love of the Old Gods; students and retirees, athletic and disabled, rural and urban, we had shared the cycles of our lives over many years.

The years that have passed have changed that community. Some of the faces that were at that table have been taken from us by death. Bitter quarrels have divided us, and time has only partially reconciled us. Formerly healthy adults have become disabled, children have become adults, and some of us have moved far, far away, never to return.

But the sense of connection remains. My own daughter I remember rocketing through the woods with a mini-tribe of younger Pagans, when she was only eight years old. "Mom!" she called out to me, one day as she dashed past. "Mom! Mom! We're playing we're like it was in the old days--like we're a Pagan village!"

"Playing" indeed--but it was no game. It was real. I was there.

My daughter no longer considers herself to be a Pagan. Does that invalidate the time she spent in the "Pagan village" as a child? I think not. She is still close to many of the adults from that spiritual community, still discusses her spiritual life (which is alive and flourishing, albeit in a different form from my own) with not only me, but with many of those adults who knew her as that joyful wild child.

How common is it for our children, once grown, to remain close friends with their parents' closest friends?

I hope it is common indeed, at least within the Pagan world. For, with my own daughter grown, my heart has room in it for my friends' children. One of the joys of middle age, for me, is the sense of continuity and connection I have with my friends' children as I watch them grow. This is true whether they remain Pagan--as some have--or not--as some have not.

This is, I think, because the connections we have with one another, whether within generations or spanning them, are much less about what we believe--a creed or common ideology--as about who we are.

We Pagans are a people in relationship with one another: a relationship deepened by our lived experiences of the Old Gods, but both wider and deeper than any single set of religious doctrines. We are rooted, in the final analysis, in Life--in shared Life: in community.

There has been a lot of talk, in recent weeks, about how Paganism is not really a community, how even the concept of "Paganism" as a single anything, as an identity, is meaningless.

As someone who has drunk deep from the well of a diverse and tradition-spanning Pagan community, I beg to differ. At our best, we grow and deepen in our love for one another, love that unites rather than divides by ideology; love that is shared with the earth; love that lasts even through pain and aging.

I've tasted this water. To my community, to my family, I say: do not settle for less.

If you build it, we will come.

And yet, we (my wife, Ceridwen and I) built it. They went. This didn't happen. As hard as we tried, what ultimately happened was just the opposite of the vision presented here. I don't know why, as I have seen it elsewhere. In Southern Oregon, where we seeded a Pagan community there, they have a highly organized one. They have their own schools, daycare, store, regular public rituals. Not here. In Santa Cruz CA, several Pagan communities exist and overlap. Not here. Why is that? Why not Humboldt County?

Apples and oranges. My participation, or lack thereof, in Facebook is totally my choice, and that choice harms no one but my self. On the other hand, I have no choice but to stand by helplessly and watch BP pour gaziilions of pollutant into the very womb of mother earth. If we are one with, as the Reformed Druid ritual of the Waters of Life states, the "All Mother," then we are one with the Goddess, the Gods the planet, the Universe ("the Universe is YOU") and with our fellow Earthlings. These are the "Gods" we serve, and by doing so, we also serve ourselves; the collective (God); the "All Mother," "The People" (or cymru).

My wife and I just came back from seeing "Avatar." Funny how these concepts are
dovetailed into this particular modern mythos, even down to some of the
terminology.

The Gods, whether Celtic, Roman, Greek, Indian, Norse, etc., were originally made up by someone. Early literature; novels; stories, were spun around fictional characters who later became defied. In some cases (and this seems especially true of the Celts), some of these heroes actually lived, and the stories glorified their deeds. As these heroes became entrenched in human consciousness, supernatural elements or powers became attached to them, and new myths emerged.

We can assume that the Druids invented Brigid, Lugh, Manawyddan, etc. Are they real? You betch'a they are! As are the invented Gods of the Reform: Dalon ap Landu, Sequoia, Cywarch merch Dalon, Be'al. The Earth Mother is a Goddess. She is very real (and, in a real pissy mood lately -- Chile, Haiti, where else?). Did we create her? Yes - gazillions of years ago, in a force we unleashed called "the big bang."

But we forgot. Over time, we forgot who we are, what we are. Lost in the illusion of our separateness, we see our fellow gods as something bigger/better than we are. We've fallen into a deep sleep of individuality, a denial of both our humanity and our deity.

The old ones and the archetypes call unto us: wake up, brothers and sisters, wake up! Join us once again, as you did many ages past. Join us in the great link ('r 'n fawr ddolen).

Of God, Gods and Nature

Some of us believe that there are 3 kinds of Gods. The "Old Ones" or ancestors, are first in honor and in consultation. The archetypes are largely made up, as all Gods are and always have been, but there are valuable lessons to be learned from their myths, and they are largely our role models. Then there is the final class: US. You, me, and everyone else. "Thou art God," we say, but really we are just learning how. When we "die," we join the "old ones," and the cycle continues.

But Nature is God as well, deserving of our worship and reverence. I sometimes think that the archetypal Gods are simply anthropomorphous thought forms about Nature. Nature IS. The Earth Mother, or Gaia, is one entity. Though parts of Nature seem to our limited vision to be separate things (like the plant kingdom, the animal kingdom, minerals, humankind etc.,) everything works together as a whole. So Nature is God, and since we are also Nature, we are God as well.

We believe that most of the harm caused by humankind to the Earth Mother and to each other is the direct result of our lack or knowledge, our denial, of our own divinity and the false belief that we are individuals, unconnected to anything or anyone else. This idea of separateness is the cancer that has infected the planet. It is our mission as Druids to eradicate this cancer.

Of course, all of the above is simply MNSHO. Your mileage may vary.

Some thoughts on conspiracy theories

I was just reading an article over on the Alternet site (http://www.alternet.org/ (one of the better sources for news, really) that attempts to explain why people are drawn to conspiracy theories. Those of us who are of a magickal bent know that fear is one of the enemies of magick. Sites that deal in Conspiracy Theories are mainly dealing in fear. which almost always evolves into hatred, which is the most toxic emotion there is (it's well known that fear and hatred can cause cancer).

Now, the article in question was pretty clear as to why the average Joe is drawn to conspiracies, but what about the average Pagan? Why are some Pagans drawn to these ideas? It boggles my mind actually. Especially when the people making the most money and the most points on these websites are Christians. The two biggest ones, and yes, they are Christians, with a Christian worldview, are David Icke and Alex Jones. One of their favorite subjects is "The New World Order."

But lets compare two websites, which both expose the same information, but draw radically different conclusions. One is Alex Jones site, and the other belongs to "The Open Cheops Committee". The later is decidedly (but not overtly) Christian, and former has a more occult orientation, probably Gnostic.

Compare these two articles about Washington DC:

These two examples give you some of the same information concerning Washington DC, but whereas for Jones, this information is used to spread fear and panic, the Open Cheops site uses it to prove that a better world is coming.

Jones is a Christian, "Open Cheops" is an Occult/ New Age group. Who do you want to believe?

I believe in One World Government. Further, I think that perhaps it's true concerning the Masonic underpinnings of the United States, and I theorize that the original intent of the Founding Fathers was One World Government. Why do you suppose that we have 50 States rather than 50 provinces? If you look up the meaning of "State" you'll see that a "State" is a country. Our State Department deals with other countries, not any of the 50 states. We speak of the "State of Israel," and the "State of France." So why not 50 Provinces, like in Canada, like in other countries?

Because the United States of America is a model for One World Government. Because the long term vision of the Founding Fathers was the "United States of Earth," and our Constitution and system of government was designed to accommodate just such an idea. Don't believe me? Why is "Ordo Novus Seclorum" on our Great Seal? Why is it that in the Star Trek series, we have a "United Federation of Planets?" Sounds like an expansion of the same idea to me.

What I am saying here is that for Pagans, we might want to embrace the New World Order, because it's only the Christians who seem to fear it. The mythology of NWO is all tied up into their belief of the apocalypse and the 2nd Coming of Christ, and the Anti-Christ. It's all tied up in fear and hate and, well, Christian mythology. I don't believe we Pagans have anything at all to fear from this stuff -- IF it's even true.

Why is there indifference? Why do some have no compassion for those who suffer? Surely, if you stub your toe, your entire body is aware of it. How can it not be? The Haitian quake could just as easily had happened in Eureka (and as you know, we had a 6.5 about a week before).

There is only one Gaia. We are all a part of her. We are her. Haiti is my leg, and right now it is hurting. I feel the pain -- I can't deny it. The kids in Ethiopia are my arm, and right now it is hurting. I can feel the pain, and I cannot deny it. If your arm was bleeding, would you be indifferent, and just let it bleed? No, you would put a bandage on it, and stop the bleeding and the pain. You would not be indifferent.

Let's take this to another level, one we are all (or should be) very familiar with:

Thou art God: this phrase is the core belief of OMS. We are all here because we acknowledge this basic truth.

Thou art God, and I am God, and all that Groks is God. The people of Haiti are God, and so are the children of Ethiopia. And so God hurts. You hurt and I hurt and all that Groks hurts.

The separateness you experience, your individuality, is an illusion. It's not real. We never say "Thou art A God," or "Thou art Gods." No, we say "Thou art God" -- it's oneness. It's unity. We are one organism -- one being -- one Light.

Drifting off: I've been thinking lately of our three tenets: "Nature is good," "Nature is very good," "Thou art God." I've been meditating along this line: If "Thou art God," then, it goes without saying that "nature is good." It becomes redundant. Nature is God. Thou art God. Thou art Nature. Nature is good.

Maybe all we really need is "Thou art God."

All You Need Is Love

Love is the most powerful force in the universe. Love is the force behind Light, and Light dispels darkness completely. You know, from the scientific point of view, darkness doesn't really exist. The scientific definition of "darkness" is "the absence of light." In other words, darkness is nothing. Zip. Nada. There is no power in darkness.

Sometimes we speak of "the forces," or "powers of darkness." These are illusions, lies really, since some people, falsely believing in their separateness from others (as if they could hurt others without hurting themselves -- the ultimate lie), attempt to enlist these powers in order that they may feel superior, or to have power over others. When the light of Truth and Love is turned on, these folks scatter like cockroaches and hide in the dark places.

There is nothing more powerful than love. In the face of Love, hate dissipates. In the face of Love, fear recedes. In the face of Love, so called "black magick," or "dark arts," are rendered impotent.

This may be a cliche, but nonetheless, the Beatles had it right when they said, "All you need is Love."

1) Stop exporting jobs! Manufacturers whos company headquarters are in the United States must manufacture their product -- 100% of it -- in the United States or face a 90% corporate tax and a ban on their product in this country. Service companies based in the US must employ 100% of their tech support and customer service people in the US of face that same corporate tax rate. Same goes for banks, credit card companies, etc.

2) Make it illegal to pump your own gas. In Oregon, in order to save jobs, they passed a law making it illegal to pump your own gas. This was decades ago. Gas is still cheaper in Oregon than in California.

Capitalism, at least the America version of it, has failed. The economic hole we are in right now is a result of UNFETTERED, unregulated capitalism. Homelessness is a result of UNFETTERED, unregulated capitalism. The fact that hundreds of people die every day for lack of healthcare is a result of UNFETTERED, unregulated capitalism. UNFETTERED, unregulated capitalism means economic freedom for a privileged few, on the backs of the working class. YOUR SYSTEM HAS FAILED!!! Maybe not for your selfish a**, but for the majority. You can take your UNFETTERED, unregulated capitalism and shove it up John Galt's fictional a**!!!!!
